What is the International Vitamin K Symposium?
But before that, what is vitamin K? Vitamin K2 is a type of vitamin K. Vitamin K was first discovered accidentally by Danish Biochemist Carl Peter Henrik Dam when he performed an experiment with chicks and came across a substance that seemed to influence bleeding. The substance was named vitamin K, with the alphabet ‘K’ derived from the German word Koagulation which means blood coagulation. Afterward, he joint hands with American Biochemist Edward Adelbert Doisy and his team to further illustrate and explain the mechanism of vitamin K. The two were later awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1943.
However, 90 years since its discovery, it is fair to say that there are not many researches in the field of vitamin K across the globe, and the same applies to the platform for researchers of this field to talk about and share views on the subject.
Bearing that in mind, to make use of vitamin K and contribute to the general health of the public and disease prevention, the symposium aims to:
- ・Promote the exchange of information between various researchers from different fields who are working on vitamin K
- ・Create a platform for discussion
- ・Stimulate more basic researches
- ・Acknowledge and summarize top-notch and novel research results
- ・Explore and review practical applications
- ・Facilitate biological demonstration and experimentation, and also researches with clinical trials in mind
All in an attempt of establishing a place where internationally recognized research results can be achieved through open and frank discussion between specialists and researchers from various fields, and those working on exploration of direct practical application of vitamin K2.
Under this symposium, academic research study group is held at least once a year. In this meeting, presentations and discussions of vitamin K2 and its related research, together with the potential for product development are focused.
